Chidagni: part 11

Devipuram

It may be mind boggling to comprehend the Divine Mother’s game plan and the players she chooses. Blessed are those souls who get the opportunity to play a vital role in her plans.

For someone like Guruji, who was never serious about God, worship, or meditation, questions arose as to what made him successfully perform Sri Yajnam in such a grand scale. What exactly happened? What was the power behind him? For someone who was determined not to think of God, religion or creation until the age of 47 years, how did all this happen? It was the grace of his Guru, his reverend master bestowing Poorna deeksha and reincarnating him as “Amritanandanatha Saraswathi.” That, along with his self-evolution were no mere coincidences, but the Divine Mother also showered him with her love and grace.  Fondly called “Guruji” at home and abroad, Prahlada Shastri continued with his quest in seeking the truth by sincerely following his master’s divine ordinances on a regular basis.

Accompanied by the Putrevu brothers, he visited Naarapadu village for the first time. Naarapadu village was about 20 miles away from Visakhapatnam. This entire area resembled a small forest. The donated land and all the land in its vicinity was covered with shrubs, weeds and bushes. There was
hardly any human presence in this area. Lack of water and electricity compounded the complexity of the task on hand.

Except for a few shepherds and the village head making an occasional visit, it was extremely difficult to ever find any humans in that neck of the woods. Yet this place surrounded by hillocks and dense forest provided peace and tranquility, along with a sense of mystique and aura.

Guruji pondered, “Who would come all the way to this deserted place if and when the temple is built?”

But at the same time Guruji very well knew that this place was the outcome (or gift from Divine Mother) upon the conclusion of Devi Yajnam. So there was no way he could simply rule it out. Since then it was Guruji’s ritual to spend every weekend at Naarapadu. Every Saturday and Sunday after finishing his morning chores and breakfast, he would venture out to Naarapadu along with his lunch in a carrier box. Upon reaching this place, he would venture out walking all over the location, hillocks and anywhere he could find a walkway to explore this pristine virgin forest land. Guruji never gave up since he knew the Divine Mother would show him the way one day.

During one of the exploration jaunts going north, Guruji happened to stumbled upon a 9 feet wide by 6 feet deep triangular shaped pit oozing water from underneath. Guruji looked inside and found a Shivalingam inside. He drank the water and it tasted divine and delicious.

Finding a pit in the shape of a female vagina with spring water, and finding a Shivalingam in it appeared amazing to Guruji. With no further thought or any hesitation, Guruji started chanting Lalitha Sahasranamam immediately. In the process, even without his knowledge, Guruji delved into a deep meditative state.

Guruji was able to visualize what happened over 250 years ago at the same location. There was the presence of a very large congregation of saints performing a grand yajna chanting Saama Veda. If performing a yajna is considered great, then performing a yajna chanting Saama Veda is considered even grander due to the epic proportion and participation by this massive ocean of pious saints! Guruji’s inner conscience could clearly hear the Divine Mother stating, “I am the one and the only one! I am here in the shape of a yoni. I am the Kaamakhya! The Shivalingam you found here is selfevolved (swayambhu). Hence forth Lord Shiva is the protector of this sacred territory. Build a Lord Shiva a temple on the hill top. Those who drink the water from this sacred pond will be rid of all diseases and ailments.

Those who pray to me with utmost devotion will be blessed with everything they wish for!” In addition, the Divine Mother instructed, “Dig three feet deep within this triangle, and you will find a Sri Chakra made of five precious metals. Consecrate this divine Sri Chakra at the nadir of the Sri Chakra Temple you are about to build. In addition, it is essential to consecrate Navaavarana Devathas and KhadgaMaala Devathas in their respective assigned positions. “Along with them, following the prescribed texts, Ganesha, Surya, Shiva, and Vishnu Yantras and Sri Rajarajeshwari Devi must be consecrated. Please make sure that all deities bear human feminine form. In coming days, I will let you know how they should look like, and what attributes they need to possess.” With utmost humility and reverence, and following the Divine Mother’s instructions, Guruji dug three feet deep, and within this triangle, he was able to find the Sri Chakra. Following the Divine Mother’s instructions, Guruji constructed a Lord Shiva Temple on the top of the hill with his accumulated savings. Upon completion of the temple and subsequent consecration, Guruji’s elder sister, Mrs. Suryalakshmi, was assigned to perform religious rituals and look after the upkeep of this temple. Guruji was able to join her in these activities every weekend. Guruji’s sister never ever felt lonely, as she kept herself occupied all the time performing abhishekam to Lord Shiva, or engaged in the upkeep of the temple and its surroundings.

One fine day, a little girl in a white dress appeared from nowhere in front of Mrs. Suryalakshmi and said “Are you not afraid to stay alone in this deserted area?” Impressed with the demeanor of this little girl, she responded “Why should I feel lonely when you are here with me?” The little girl responded, “That’s true.” Mrs. Suryalakshmi aske the little girl, “By the way, who are you? Where are you from?” The little girl with a twinkle in her eye responded, “I am I. I came here to give you company.” Mrs. Suryalakshmi said, “Okay! So you are here to give me company, and so am I, here to give you company.”

While engrossed in conversation with this cute little girl, Mrs. Suryalakshmi went to sleep that night. When she woke up in the morning, to her surprise she saw the little girl was going away towards the Meru Temple construction site. “Why are you leaving?” she called out. “Wait! Let me come!” This cute little girl neither stopped nor looked back. Mrs. Suryalakshmi did not stop and kept walking towards the little girl. This little girl finally stopped at Meru Temple construction site. For the very first time Mrs. Suryalakshmi was able to see this girl in daylight. Justifying her name “Shyama,” this cute little girl, though dark in complexion, was extremely beautiful. By the time Guruji’s sister could reach her, this cute little girl, the Divine Mother herself in the form of Bala, vanished. When Guruji came from Visakhapatnam next Saturday, his sister anxiously narrated what happened, and curiously asked Guruji who that girl could be. Guruji responded, “Who else can it be? It is the Divine Mother herself as a Bala. Well, she looked very simple because we have not decked her with jewels yet.”

Chidagni: part 10

Sri Devi Yaagam

Exactly six months after the conclusion of the grand event at Sagara Giri Durga Temple, Divine Mother appeared to Guruji. Divine Mother, in the form of Bala said, “When do you plan to build a home for me?”
Guruji laughed, and said, “If it possible, kindly make me build one yourself, because I am not in a position to build you one. I don’t have that much money. Youvery well know that.”
Bala: “I know. Please go ahead and conduct Sri Devi Yaagam.”
Guruji: “Why now?”
Bala: “Sri Devi Yaagam is for the same purpose. I told you so. So, please go ahead and organize one as suggested.”
Guruji: “Looks like your intention is not to leave me alone quietly. I have no clue how to conduct
these yagnas, and yaagas.” Bala: “Is it just for you to sit idle; did I convince you to quit your job? Even otherwise, is it you who is doing all this? It is me who is getting things accomplished through you. Just consider yourself lucky that it is you. So, please go ahead and start working on this immediately.”
Guruji: “Divine Mother! You very well know I always obey your orders, and will continue to do so in future. Without any second thoughts, I quit my job. As you know, I have 3 kids that I need to take care of. To perform Sri Devi Yaagam, I need lots of money, which I don’t have.”
Bala: “Just listen carefully. Your kids are my responsibility. Your future is my responsibility. Those who strongly believe in me have never been left in the lurch! Nor will anyone be! You are in safe hands. Please go ahead and start your preparations for Sri Devi Yaagam.”
Guruji offered his salutations to the Divine Mother, and started his inquiries about who/where and how such Yaagas are performed. Guruji then came to know that Sri Krishnayaji of Surya Peetam from Parvathipuram had a lot of experience in performing as well as conducting such a Yaagam on a grand scale. Guruji immediately went to Parvathipuram to meet Sri Krishnayaji. Upon patiently listening to what Guruji said, Sri Krishnayaji started explaining the process and procedures of Sri Devi Yaagam.

He detailed all the items needed, and mentioned that rithviks would perform homams daily. In addition, there would be group Lalitha Sahasranamam and Vishnu Sahasranamam chantings, along with kumkuma pujas every day. Sri Krishnayaji also suggested that it is better if kumkuma pujas are performed by suvasinis (married ladies). Guruji said, “As suggested, let me try to have suvasinis perform kumkuma pujas. But, will it be okay if widows also take part?” Sri Krishnayaji said, “It is against the traditions.”

Guruji responded, “Why is it against the traditions? It is not just Suvasinis alone. If someone has something already, they are not going to pray to get what they already have. So, widows who have not been lucky in this lifetime will have the opportunity to pray to Divine Mother requesting her to bless them with marital bliss in next birth. So, it is unclear to me as to why it is against the traditions?” Sri Krishnayaji, “That’s what our elders and wise men have said.”

Guruji replied, “In my opinion, I don’t believe this is ever mentioned in any underlying principles of Vedas or traditions. These have been incorporated by some few men, which have been accepted as traditions by the rest.”

Sri Krishnayaji said, “Please don’t say that. I just informed you what the traditions are. That’s the only thing that I am aware of, and would like to practice. Kindly let me know if you still wish to proceed.”

Guruji said, “I just can’t believe this. All would like to get closer to God, especially those suffering, and unlucky in life. We as fellow human beings should ensure that we provide them with all opportunities to get closer to God. That’s what I strongly believe. I would not like to say anything more, and leave it up to you. Please let me know if you have a change of heart.”

Guruji did not say anything further, and returned to Visakhapatnam. Guruji started wondering, “Will Sri Devi Yaagam ever conclude successfully? Why do people follow traditions to the word, without ever taking into consideration the human aspect of those suffering? To those who are blessed with health, and wealth, what else can God give them, especially when they have everything? In the name of religion, traditions and customs, why is the human aspect missing all together?” Guruji was extremely unhappy with the outcome of his meeting with Sri Krishnayaji. Guruji’s brother-in-law Sri Prasada Rao said, “Are we in a position to bear the expenses associated with Sri Devi Yaagam? Why do we need to do all these now? I think you have made a sincere attempt to make it happen. Let us give up now.”

Guruji responded, “No way! Divine Mother has asked me to. So, we need to go ahead with no questions asked. That’s it!”

The next day Guruji rested for a while after his lunch, and when he woke up, he had a surprise awaiting him. Sri Krishnayaji showed up unannounced at Guruji’s doorstep. Guruji cordially invited him inside, and requested him to sit. Sri Krishnayaji said, “Looks like you have a strong will. Divine Mother appeared in my dreams last night and said this yaagam is very special. ‘Don’t be
stubborn and stick to these so called customs and traditions. Please do as Sri Amritananda has requested.’ So, whatever you say will be a doctrine to me. Kindly go ahead and start your preparations for Sri Devi Yaagam.I will give you a detailed list of what is required. I will go ahead and invite rithviks. Kindly take care of the rest.”

It was at that stage that preparations picked up speed. The next big question was about the location. Where could this grand event be conducted?

It was around the same time that Simhaachala Devasthaanam had constructed a brand new marriage hall named ‘Prahlaada Kalyana Mandapam’ near Jagadamba Center in Visakhapatnam. Though construction had completed, this location was not yet inaugurated. Guruji contacted Simhaachala Devasthaanam to request them for conducting Sri Devi Yaagam at this location.

Temple Management immediately agreed to Guruji’s request. Temple Management was extremely happy and felt blessed that Sri Devi Yaagam will take place at their marriage hall, and consider this grand event as a formal inauguration April 27th, 1983 was decided as the start date for Sri Devi Yaagam. Since this was an event in honor of Divine Mother, Guruji thought it was appropriate to have an idol of the Divine Mother on the main dais. Guruji was contemplating whether to have an idol made for this occasion.

A Telugu movie “Sri Rajarajeshwari Mahatyam” had a successful run in Visakhapatnam around the same time. The owner of the movie theater had a huge idol of Divine Mother for the release of this movie. Once the movie was no longer screened, he placed this idol in his office room at the theatre. Guruji wondered if this theatre owner would oblige giving Devi’s idol for the grand event.

Guruji approached the theatre owner, and explained his situation. Theatre owner immediately agreed. He told Guruji, “We consider ourselves lucky that you have asked us to participate in this grand event. Kindly take the idol of Divine Mother.”

Guruji thanked him and went home to request Ammah accompany him for bringing the idol home. Both of them went to the cinema theatre to bring the Divine Mother idol home. As the cycle rickshaw was about to leave the cinema theatre with Divine Mother idol safely tucked in their arms, Guruji realized that someone was calling asking them to wait. Guruji heard music coming from musicians behind them and was wondering how this happened. Guruji said, “I did not request the bhajantrees.” Ammah responded, “Why do we need to request? Divine Mother wanted them, and so they are here! Let’s go.”

With all the grandeur and pomp, Divine Mother ultimately graced the dais where the grand event was scheduled. As planned, Sri Devi Yaagam commenced on April 27th, 1983 and was performed for the next 15 days. Sri Krishnayaji and Guruji’s relatives attended Sri Devi Yaagam. In addition, this grand event was witnessed by more than 100,000 locals. Guruji himself funded this entire event. Initially, it was Guruji’s intention to install 18 Sakthi Peetams as a precursor to Sri Devi Yaagam. As logistics did not permit this, Guruji installed 18 kalasams and commenced the grand event.

Every morning, the program commenced with a navaavarana puja at 5 a.m. Guruji and Ammah had actively conducted some special homams all by themselves every day. The grand event had everything going on—navaavarana puja, homams, Veda paarayanam, Devi sthuthi by ladies—all in one place these 15 days reminded everyone of good old Naimishaaranyam. Every day from 10 a.m. to noon, Lalitha Sahasranamam paarayanam and kumkuma pujas were performed. In addition, shodasaupachara pujas were performed to 18 spinsters and nine suvasinis every day by applying paarani to their feet, providing bangles to wear, honoring them by showing mirrors, and giving them blouse bits.

Kids participated enthusiastically in Bala pujas. Guruji treated these little kids with equal respect and dignity and showered them with love and affection by performing shodasa-upachara pujas. Who knows in what form the Divine Mother would come? So, Guruji performed every task, every puja meticulously with love and devotion while taking care of every minute detail.

One -day, an old poor suvasini showed up at the doorsteps and requested Guruji perform suvasini puja to her. Guruji, with no second thought, cordially invited her to sit down, and with utmost devotion and dedication performed suvasini puja to that poor lady. Ammah was next to Guruji when this happened. Guruji said, “These are the situations when Goddess Mother takes the liberty to test us. She may come in any form or disguise. Just because this lady appeared poor and dirty, we should not send her back. Had we done so, we could have failed the test of Goddess Mother. No one can be ignored or disrespected during this grand event.” There was hardly any break for anyone every day during the grand event. Every evening attendees had the opportunity to listen to religious discourses by distinguished speakers. Then, cultural programs like a classical music concert or a dance performance by enthusiastic kids followed it. After these activities, navaavarana pujas, and pujas to couples (dhampathi puja) were performed every day. The grand finale to the daily function was the mangala-aarathi using a lamp with 360 intertwined wicks, performed while religiously chanting Mantra Pushpam. At the conclusion, devotees would offer their final respects to Goddess Mother, take prasadam and leave for the day.

Donation of Devipuram land

On the third day of the Sri Devi Yaagam, to everyone’s surprise a wonderful thing happened. On the third day of Sri Devi Yaagam, a blessed soul Sri Putrevu Babu Rao along with his brother attended the event, and donated 3 acres of cashew gardens on the suburbs of Narapadu village to Guruji. Guruji said, “What can I do with this land far away from the city”?

Sri Babu Rao replied, “Please come and see this place for yourself once. Kindly accept our donation, and you can later decide what to do with it.” Guruji accepted the invitation.

April 27th, 1983 was the day on which Sree Devi Yaagam started, which also happened to be the first day of Vasantha Navaraathri. Sree Devi Yaagam was celebrated with pomp and splendor all 15 days. On the 16th day, all 18 kalasams along with Divine Mother were taken in a grand procession around the city and they ended up on the beach for immersion.

Everyone who participated in the procession walked bare foot all along the entire route. Some of the participants were disappointed upon the conclusion of grand event. They questioned Guruji, “Why did you conclude Sree Devi Yaagam so quickly? Why not extend these events by few more days?” Some wept profusely, and said, “Divine Mother! We wish to come with you!” They started walking towards the sea.

With a quick presence of mind, Guruji immediately formed a human chain along with few other men to prevent women from moving ahead into the sea. All 18 kalasams along with the idol of Divine Mother were slowly immersed into the ocean. The idol of Divine Mother danced to the waves of the ocean while slowly making its way towards the ocean bottom. Though there was lot of joy all around, they kept staring at the ocean with a heavy heart, and started reminiscing sweet memories of the grand event that occurred over the past few days. Sri Krishnayaji ensured that Guruji and Ammah completed their traditional rituals right on the sea shore, before they could return back to the hall. Upon return, Guruji and Ammah changed out of their wet clothes and performed remaining formalities to conclude Sree Devi Yaagam. All those who participated in this grand event profusely thanked and commended Guruji for having given them this unique opportunity to participate.

Once the dust settled, Guruji took the time to tally the expenses, and realized that the returns were 3,000 rupees more than his initial investment of 70,000 rupees for this grand event. Guruji deposited the entire amount back into her account at the bank. The location of these divine wonders next shifted to the cashew gardens near the suburbs of Narapadu village, the current location of Devipuram.

Chidagni: part 9

As time progressed, Guruji slowly started losing interest in his job, family, kids, society, colleagues, friends, and friendships. Not that Guruji was disillusioned; it was just that these things did not interest him anymore. More and more, his affi nity to the Divine Mother led his heart to feel happiness in divine aspects. Eventually, this led to his disinterest in the physical aspects of everyday living. Topping this off was the persistence of the Divine Mother asking Guruji to quit his job.

The search for answers to his questions was always in the back of Guruji’s mind: “What am I going to do? What will happen to my wife and kids?” The Divine Mother always kept reminding Guruji, “Don’t worry! I am there for you. I will take care of them.” “How can one let go of a decent job?” Guruji asked Her. “Is there anything more stupid than that?” But in reality, there was nothing more precious than meditating on the Divine Mother! For Guruji, there was nothing more interesting or fulfi lling than reflecting upon Her. So what to do? After returning from Zambia, Guruji was assigned to research in the Air Defense division. Guruji was not that interested to conduct research in Air Defense, and his superiors were not willing to transfer him to a different division either. Yet, following the process, Guruji requested a transfer to a different division. There was no response from Guruji’s management. The lack of Guruji’s interest in his work, the Divine Mother’s persistence in asking him to quit his job, and the lack of response from Guruji’s management all contributed to Guruji losing patience.

One fine day Guruji told his wife, “I don’t want to continue in this job. I will quit.” Married life motherhood enlighten women to better understand responsibilities, and to develop foresight in such situations. When a husband mentions about quitting the family’s only livelihood, most women would be extremely worried. But to Mrs. Annapoornamma these things did not bother her! Instead she told Guruji, “Don’t try to do something that you don’t like to do! Whether you have a job or not, you know your responsibilities. You will anyhow share what you have. So, it is up to you!”

Guruji thought about it and came to a conclusion. He resigned from his job and split his accumulated earnings into five equal parts; one for each of his children, one for the Divine Mother, and the last one to both of them.

After an exemplary 25 years of professional service, Guruji returned to Visakhapatnam in 1981. Many questions remained unanswered from his young age. Even the answered ones were incomplete. When he was growing up, Guruji had decided not to think of these until he was at least 40 years old. Now the time had come when he involuntarily engaged himself in this spiritual journey, seeking answers at 47 years of age after he retired from his job at Bombay.

Upon his return to Visakhapatnam in 1981, Guruji started living in his own home along with his younger brother. Answers to questions that bothered him from his young age gradually bore fruits in the form of divine experiences. Guruji’s sincere efforts in the form of Lalita Sahasranamam parayanam and Navaavarana pujas started bringing people closer to Guruji.
Until then, the common man was scared to chant Lalita Sahasranamam. It was deeply embedded in their minds that strict traditions and customs had to be followed, but that such elaborate rituals were not needed for the common man. In addition, people feared that they might face the wrath of the Divine Mother if they made a mistake knowingly or unknowingly. But over a period of time, people overcame their inhibitions to join Guruji in chanting the Lalita Sahasranamam. There were no bounds to Guruji’s devotion and dedication so he was always surprised to find that people had fears, doubts and inhibitions. He always imbibed confidence that the Divine Mother would never seek to destroy, but instead love and protect her children, even if they committed a mistake unknowingly.

Gradually, devotees realized that the Divine Mother had no reservations or qualms about caste, creed, religion, hard customs, or traditions. Will any kid choose a day or time to sleep in his mother’s lap? Will a mother ever insist on a kid to sleep at a specific day or time in her lap?
The answer is NO! So, Guruji was able to convince and instill confidence that any person can pray to the Divine Mother whenever and wherever they wish.
Slowly, women started actively participating in a Lalita Sahasranamam parayanam group.

Sri Chakra temple model

One day, the Divine Mother in the form of Balatripurasundari appeared to Guruji and said, “Please construct me a home.” Guruji got the shock of his life and said, “What? Home? I don’t have one for myself. From where can I get one constructed for you?” Bala said, “Who said you don’t have one? Is not mine yours?” Guruji replied, “I agree! Yours may be mine, and mine may be yours. But where do I have any money to build one? Sorry! I cannot build one for you, Mother.” But Bala said, “You will build me one. You will be able to build one soon.” After this divine intervention, one day during Guruji’s meditation, a multi-layered, multidimensional, multi-deity formation appeared before him, in the form of the Sri Chakra with the Divine Mother at the pinnacle. That visualization was extraordinary and the temple very beautiful. Guruji was extremely enamored over and over again by the Manidweepa temple that he visualized in his meditation. He immediately summoned a carpenter to build a model of his visualization. With the Divine Mother’s blessing, this Manidweepa temple model turned out to be exquisite.

Sagara Giri Durga Pilgrimage
Durga in Sagara Giri Temple
The Divine Mother said to Guruji, “I would like you to take 108 bare-footed Lalita Sahasranamam chanting Suvasinis to the Sagara Giri Temple to perform puja.” Guruji immediately informed all those near and dear about this mammoth undertaking, and the word spread around like wildfire. In addition, leaflets were also distributed to spread the word around every nook and corner. It was in October 1982 this grand event occurred. Abhijit Lagnam (Early morning 6 a.m.) was chosen as the start time on an auspicious day for this great undertaking, and all arrangements were made. Many suvasinis enthusiastically came forward to take part. The previous night, all of a sudden, there was a heavy downpour accompanied by squalls. It poured cats and dogs to no avail. Upon seeing this, Guruji’s younger brother said,“In this heavy rain, do you think anyone will show up tomorrow morning? Should we cancel the event?” Guruji replied, “No way! We are not canceling the event. Whether anyone comes or not, the Divine Mother and I are going. There is no way that program will be cancelled or postponed.” What else can be done when such a decision is made? The downpour continued and the house was packed with friends and relatives and their kids. At this critical juncture, Guruji realized that they lost power and no one knew when power would be restored. It was dark everywhere. It was wet, damp and crazy all around.

On one side, when things were in such a bad and confusing state, Gurupatni Smt. Annapoornamma did realize that she had all the raw material ready to make laddus for the grand event, and laddus were not ready yet. Guruji’s sister Smt. Suryalakshmi realized that there was no point in patiently waiting for the power to be restored. So, she took the initiative in lighting a candle and assisted her sister-in-law to prepare laddus in the darkness. The heavy downpour continued and it seemed it would not end in the near future. The next day’s grand event was a concern on everyone’s mind.
Guruji was watching how the events were unfolding. He thought for a moment, and went inside to the shrine room and brought the miniature model of the Sri Chakra that he had designed, and left it in the heavy downpour. Either it was a sheer miracle or blessings of divine beings, that in a span of 15 minutes after that simple action that the rain completely stopped! Guruji brought back the Sri Chakra inside after that. As planned, at 6 a.m. sharp Guruji with the miniature Sri Chakra model safely placed on his head, left bare-footed for the journey. Until then, all the neighbors had assumed that Guruji might have cancelled the program. Once they came to know that the grand event was on schedule, they hurried up and joined the procession.

Ultimately all 108 Suvasinis were part of the procession chanting Lalita Sahasranamam and were right behind Guruji who had Sri Chakra temple miniature on the top of his head. The traditional shahanai music that accompanied this procession enhanced the spiritual atmosphere. It was a sight to watch all participants walking bare-footed towards the seashore. Upon reaching the seashore, all the ladies boarded the boat that was awaiting their presence. Guruji also boarded another boat, still with the Sri Chakra temple miniature firmly on the top of his head. The boats started their journey towards Dolphin Nose. Sagara Giri Durga Temple is nested on top of Dolphin’s Nose hillock. Upon reaching the base of the hill, all alit from the boats and continued their journey to the top of the hill by foot. Guruji continued his journey to the temple by foot still with Sri Chakra temple miniature firmly placed atop his head.

Upon reaching the temple, Guruji directly approached the Simha Vahanam (lion vehicle statue) and firmly sat on its back with his legs on either side, still with the Sri Chakra temple model firmly on his head. Upon seeing this, Guruji’s sister Mrs. Suryalakshmi immediately approached Guruji, broke a coconut, lit camphor, and offered arathi. After this, Guruji became his normal self, got off from the Simha Vahanam, and put the Sri Chakra temple miniature down.

All the pujas were performed by the 108 suvasinis on a very elaborate scale, and thus concluded this grant event, which was a success beyond everyone’s imagination. This was followed by distribution of prasadam to all those present. A few days passed after this grand event. It so happened that a temple trustee had visited the Sagara Giri Durga Temple. The Sri Chakra temple model grabbed his attention and he asked the chief priest what it was, and who left it there. The chief priest narrated to the temple trustee what occurred few days ago. Temple trustee: “It is okay for them to come and perform pujas. But they need to take their things back with them. They can’t leave these in our temple.”

The chief priest was left with no alternative but to inform Guruji the next day what transpired between him and the temple trustee. Guruji went to Sagara Giri Durga Temple the next day and brought the Sri Chakra temple model back home. Smt.Annapurnamma asked, “What happened? Why did you bring this home? Is it not something related to the Divine Mother? Had it remained in the temple what would have happened?” Guruji replied, “Don’t worry! They were not fortunate enough to retain this replica of divinity!”

Chidagni: part 8

Zambia

It was in 1977 Guruji had gone to Zambia on deputation, to work as a professor of nuclear physics at Lusaka University. Guruji’s family accompanied him, and they stayed in Zambia for 2 years. Though far away from his motherland, Guruji continued his spiritual journey even in Lusaka with chanting Lalita Sahasranamam, Navavarana pujas, etc. on a regular basis. If Guruji came to know that there was a Lalita Sahasranamam parayanam going on, he would join along with his wife and kids.

It was here in Lusaka that he met Professor Ramanathan, Sri Balasubramanyam, and Sri Wijayaharan. There were many South Asian families residing in Zambia those days, and these families wanted to ensure their kith and kin did not lose touch with their culture and traditions.

These Indian families had the utmost devotion and had celebrated every Hindu festival religiously, but some were limited by their knowledge of rituals. To ensure continuity, they would meet either weekly or monthly and chant Lalita Sahasranamam and Vishnu Sahasranamam without fail.

Sai Baba bhajans were a common event during such regular gatherings. In addition, those with some knowledgeable background in scriptures and Vedas conducted religious discourses. In this fashion, those Indians living in Zambia continued to keep in touch with their religious roots and Hindu culture.

Sri Balasubramanyam took an active part in all religious activities. He had Guruji by his side whenever he attended such festival functions. Since all these functions were in the evenings Guruji’s family accompanied him. Though Indians in Zambia chanted Sahasranamam on a regular basis, they were unaware of its diction and pronunciation. Guruji explained in detail the finer aspects of chanting Sahasranamam to others. Gradually, they started liking Guruji and were eager to learn about religion, customs, traditions, and about Hindu culture from him. Over a period of time, the South Asians in Lusaka started looking up to Guruji for counsel and guidance. The daughter of one Gujarati family residing in Lusaka was ready to get married.

Unfortunately, there was no Hindu priest to conduct the wedding, so the Gujarati family approached Guruji to do it. Guruji said, “I do not know how to conduct a Hindu marriage. All I know is Lalita Sahasranamam.

How do you expect me to perform the marriage?” The girl’s father responded, “Please chant Lalita Sahasranamam and conduct the wedding. All that we want is you to perform the wedding. What mantras you chant is immaterial.” So, Guruji went ahead and performed the wedding by chanting Lalita Sahasranamam. This blessed Gujarati couple has remained “happily ever after” to this day!

Gujaratis are generally very devout. The Gujaratis in Zambia had converted one house into a temple. Daily rituals were sincerely performed to a few photos of gods and goddesses in that shrine. Sri Gananathan thought it would be more appropriate to have an idol in place of the photographs to worship and perform daily rituals, so he successfully managed to get the idolof Lalita Devi from India.

The next important question came up—who will consecrate the Lalita Devi idol now? Naturally, they looked to Guruji for answers. Guruji said, “I have never consecrated any idol to this day. I do not know how to!” The unanimous response was, “Please don’t say so! We look to you for guidance. Only you can perform this holy task. Kindly accept our humble request.” Guruji was speechless. He did not know what to do.

He meditated that night. By the time he got up, he was fully aware of all the consecration rituals and all associated holy chantings by heart. It was Devi herself who taught Guruji everything to do with idol consecration. Devi’s wonders were countless! Guruji picked an auspicious day and time for Lalita Devi idol consecration. He performed this event on a very grand scale following all necessary rituals, and Vedic chantings. Lalita Devi’s idol was consecrated in a small suburb of Lusaka called Kavyoowe. This Lalita Devi Temple has become the main center of worship for all Hindus in Lusaka even to this day!

Guruji and Vijayaharan
Sri Wijayaharan

Sri Wijayaharan was a close friend of Sri Balasubramanyam and they had been living close to each other in Zambia for a very long time. Sri Wijayaharan was a Sri Lankan Tamil and an architect by profession. He was extremely devout and highly spiritual in his endeavors, and he was initiated at a very young age by a disciple of Swami Sivananda.

Sri Wijayaharan had taken on these initiated mantras very seriously, and these became his way of life. Whether it was the power of these mantras, or it was his inbuilt will power, he was always aiming to reach the highest peaks of spirituality. This desire in him grew stronger day by day. Sri Wijayaharan
attended all functions, festivals, and all programs of spirituality that were celebrated in Zambia. His prized possessions were a tabla and a harmonium that enabled him to perform bhajans with utmost devotion. He was the people’s favorite for devotional bhajans.

It was his long unfulfilled wish that someone would teach and guide him through the principles of Vedic worship. He was always on the lookout for such a noble soul. Since his initiation by Mataji, he was on the lookout for a guru that could lead him to higher levels in spirituality.

Instead, people discouraged him saying, “Why learn these mantras? Why do these pujas? Being non-Brahmins, in case we make any mistake knowingly or unknowingly, these can destroy a person completely. Better stay away from it.” Sri Wijayaharan felt that he could never realize his unfulfilled dream to attain high levels of spirituality in this lifetime.

During one of his conversations with Sri Balasubramanyam, Sri Wijayaharan wondered whether Guruji initiated people into Devi worship. Sri Balasubramanyam responded, “He has initiated many. As long as one’s intention is sincere, he does initiate.”

In addition, he said, “My wife went to India to get initiated. She met Kanchi Kamakoti Peetadhipathi Sri Sri Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi, and expressed her desire to get initiated. He said I am not your guru. Your guru is in Africa. His name is Amritananda Saraswathi. Go and request him to give you manthropadesam.”

Hearing this Sri Wijayaharan got a glimmer of hope. This conversation continued. “Will he initiate me?” Sri Wijayaharan asked. “I see no reason why he will not initiate you,” Sri Balasubramanyam replied. “As you know, I am not a Brahmin,” Sri Wijayaharan said. “He does not differentiate,” Sri Balasubramanyam assured him. “He will surely give you manthropadesam.”

“So, can we go and ask him tomorrow?” Sri Wijayaharan suggested. “If he agrees, well and good! If he doesn’t, I will consider him one of the many who declined.”

It was one of the days during Navarathri. Sri Wijayaharan and Sri Balasubramanyam went together to meet Guruji and make their humble request.

“Why won’t I?” Guruji said. “I will give it to you! These are the days of Navarathri. These are really auspicious days. Panchami is even better. I will initiate you on that day!”

As promised, Guruji went to Sri Wijayaharan’s house on the auspicious day of Panchami and performed Sri Chakra Puja and gave him and his wife the manthropadesam.

Sri Wijayaharan’s joy knew no bounds. Whether it was the effect of Guruji’s manthropadesam or Sri Wijayaharan’s dedication or both coming together, Sri Wijayaharan reached greater spiritual heights. Since then, he had established himself very well in the USA and consecrated his own temple, the Sri Rajarajeswari Peetam in Rush, New York Within four or five months since being initiated by Guruji, Sri Wijayaharan migrated to the USA. It just seems like he may have spent such a long time in Zambia only to meet Guruji and get initiated.

Detachment from common life

While in Zambia itself, Sri Balatripurasundari appeared in many forms to impart spiritual knowledge to Guruji. Along with this, his inbuilt urge to share the knowledge of Sri Vidya, and thereby help others on the righteous path was a huge motivation.

During almost every one of Guruji’s interactions with the Divine Mother, she said, “Why do you need this job? Just stay with me. I will give you everything.” “That sounds too good!” Guruji replied to Her. “You have imbibed spirituality in me. You taught me all sacred scriptures. You have shown me the world. I am giving manthropadesam to all those who seek it from me. Performing pujas and bhajans has become my way of life.
“At this stage, in this state of ecstasy, fulfilling my professional obligations has become a big test on its own. Under such circumstances, if I quit my only livelihood, what will I do? How can I feed my wife and chil dren? I am not rich either!”
“This job is no big deal!” the Divine Mother responded. “You have attained high levels of spirituality, which cannot be confined by your professional status. Please quit your job.” “I am not alone,” Guruji said. “I have a wife and three kids to take care of.” “Is it just your wife and kids?” the Mother asked. “Is you who is feeding them? Is it you who is bearing the responsibility on your shoulders?” “Then who is it?” Guruji asked. “It is me who brought everyone into existence,” the Mother explained. “It is me who is bearing everyone’s responsibility. It is me who is taking care of everyone.” “So what is happening to me?” Guruji asked. Understanding Guruji’s predicament, the Divine Mother smiled and said, “Nothing is happening to you. You are safe and sound in my arms.”

During the early days, Guruji was always worried that these divine interventions and divine experiences were taking away his time and energy, and was not sure if he was allocating the necessary attention to his family and job. But, at the same time, he was enjoying his spiritual journey and all the exhilarating experiences along the way! Guruji’s life continued peacefully and happily in Zambia.

The Divine Mother showered Her grace on him in the form of a home, car, prestige, wealth, and a professorship at a university. It was in 1980 that Guruji’s deputation came to an end, and he returned to Mumbai to take up his old job.

Chidagni: part 7

Guru Dharshanam

While these divine visions were happening to Guruji at regular intervals, he visited Visakhapatnam. On hearing about his experiences, Guruji’s maternal aunt advised him to seek the guidance of a guru, and warned him not to pursue the spiritual path on his own. She had intentions of taking our Guruji to her guru. Since her guru was a staunch follower of the Dakshinamoorthi tradition, Guruji was a little uncomfortable with the associated customs of this tradition. So Guruji declined the offer.

Guruji’s maternal aunt’s nephew, Sri Gunturu Subrahmanyam, who happened to visit Visakhapatnam at that time, mentioned his spiritual master, Sri Svaprakashananda Thirtha or Guru Garu, residing at
Anakapalle, and wanted Guruji to meet him. He also mentioned that this spiritual master, who was 60
years old at that time, had been highly devoted to God since he was 8 years old. Hearing this, Guruji jotted down all his unanswered questions on a piece of paper and gave it to his cousin. He said to the cousin, “Please pass these questions to your master. Upon receiving his answers, I will come with you to meet him.”

Guruji’s questions were many:

· What is the difference between visions of imagination, and the actual
divine occurrences that happen?
· Did the divine occurrences happen as a matter of fact or was there strong
reason behind it?
· Were these occurrences a way to show me the unseen divine?
· Were these divine occurrences my imagination or real happenings?
· What is the difference between sleep, unconsciousness and death?
· How different is the experience of unconsciousness from death?

Along with this lengthy list of unanswered questions, Guruji mentioned about the scriptures he read, and the subsequent divine experiences he encountered until then. Guruji’s cousin approached Guru Garu and handed over this questionnaire from Guruji. Upon reading this Guru Garu said, “Who is he? Before I respond to these questions, I would like to meet him in person.”

So, Guruji was left with no alternative but to meet Guru Garu at Anakapalle. Once Guruji approached Guru Garu, he said, “Do you have answers to my questions?” Instead of responding to his questions, Guru Garu said, “Please come and meet me at 4 a.m. tomorrow.” Guruji went to meet Guru Garu at 4 a.m. the next morning. Guru Garu cordially invited him, and said, “I wish to give you some mantras. Are you willing to accept them?” Guruji said, “I am not here for mantras. I am here for responses to my long unanswered questions. Please give me answers to my questions.”

Guru Garu said, “No! I will not give answers to your questions. I wish to give you something else. Are you willing to take?”

Guruji was in a fix. He felt that by saying yes, it would bring an additional responsibility to him, which he did not want. At the same he also felt by saying no, it would mean he lost a great opportunity. He did not know what to do.

Ultimately, Guruji gathered courage and asked Guru Garu, “By accepting these mantras, what will it do? Good or bad?” Guru Garu said, “Only good! These will do you no harm!” Guruji responded, “What happens in case I don’t chant these mantras? Are there any compulsions or restrictions associated with these?”

Guru Garu said, “You need not worry about the consequences. I am giving them to you. I will bear the consequences, if any.” Hearing that, Guruji readily agreed to get the diksha from Guru Garu. Contrary to the divine diksha Guruji received at Balaji temple, this time he was receiving mantra diksha from a human.

It was then that Guru Garu gave Guruji nine mantras. They were Maha Ganapathi, Subrahmanya, Chandi, Surya, Dattatreya, Prasada Panchaakshari, Guru Mantram, Baala Tripurasundari, and Sowbhagya Vidya. Guruji then asked Guru Garu, “Okay! You have given me all these mantras and I have taken them. Can you please tell me the number of times I need to chant each mantra?” Guru Garu said, “I will not impose any restrictions. I will not teach you any traditions. You are unique in your own way! Meditate with these mantras whenever you want to. If you don’t feel like doing so, please don’t. You need no regulations on place or day or time! Even if you don’t practice that is fine with me!”

Guruji then asked, “In case I have any doubts can I write to you? Will you reply to me?” Guru Garu said, “You need not write to me. Answers to your questions will come from within you! These mantras are powerful. They will generate the response and clear your doubts.” The Yoga Sakthi Mission Guruji, having been initiated by Guru Garu, returned to Bombay.(present-day Mumbai). Once coming back, Guruji was fully involved in his daily routine. Research work and dedicated meditation kept him busy.

During those days, Guruji had a small photograph of Santoshi Maatha. Occasionally, he would stare at this photograph of Santoshi Mata, particularly at the sword in her right hand. There were few occasions when this sword would turn into a flower garland.

Guruji was not the one who prayed regularly, but was well familiar with rituals. Beloved mother taught Guruji that the one who offers the prayers and the one to whom the prayers are
offered are both one. Sri Santoshi Mata enlightened Guruji with Sree Suktham, Purusha Suktham, Puja rituals, and many other mantras.

Yoga Sakthi Mission was a spiritual organization located in Bombay. This mission functions from a location on Nepean Sea Road. During those days, this was the premier location in Bombay for anyone to learn yoga. They also conducted spiritual retreats, Durga pujas, and meditation classes on a regular basis.

Sri Krishnamurthy was the individual responsible for the astounding popularity of Yoga Sakthi Mission in those days.

Whenever possible, he would invite sadhus, spiritually enlightened people, poet laureates, and other well-respected individuals to offer lectures and workshops at this mission.

One day, Guruji along with his family visited the Yoga Sakthi Mission. Sri Krishnamurthy introduced himself to Guruji, and quickly developed a close bond with him right from the first meeting. He encouraged Guruji to offer lectures on a regular basis at the mission. Guruji also developed a liking towards this organization, and started visiting the Yoga Sakthi Mission on a regular basis. He started showing keen interest in the activities going on there. Sri Krishnamurthy was performing Durga pujas and homams on a very elaborate scale in those days. Generally they were an all-day affair.

After having seen all this, Guruji wondered why these rituals should be an all-day affair when people need to go to work, and when ladies toil for hours to make necessary arrangements. So, Guruji referred to multiple books and other references to provide necessary material for completing Devi puja in 90 to 120 minutes.

It was not just in Bombay, but Sri Krishnamurthy was performing pujas and homams all over the country. Once, he was going to Kollur Mookambika Temple to perform a homam and had invited Guruji and Ammah to join him. As Guruji was busy in a conference he could not join Sri Krishnamurthy immediately. He was able to be at the Mookambika Temple for purnahuthi on the fourth and final day. Upon the completion of purnahuthi, Sri Krishnamurthy gave purna diksha to Guruji and Ammah.

As Guruji had been given purna diksha, Sri Krishnamurthy said that Guruji could initiate others into Sri Vidya. Sri Prahlada Shastri henceforth became popular as Sri Amritanandanatha.

Guruji went back to Anakapalle to meet his first spiritual master Guru Garu, and conveyed to him everything that that transpired. Guru Garu patiently listened to Guruji, laughed and said, “Don’t worry, I am going to perform Purna Kumbabhishekham to you!” Guru Garu then sprinkled water on Guruji’s head. From then on, Guruji had two gurus. Initiation by two masters boggled Guruji’s mind. Sri Svaprakashananda Thirtha (Guru Garu) was considered a siddha, a yoga purusha. Professor Krishnamurthy was considered an expert and a well-versed laureate in spiritual sciences and the Vedas. In addition, he was a true practitioner of Kaulachaara (the left-handed path). Gradually, Guruji grew closer to Sri Svaprakashananda Thirtha. Yet, Guruji retained his unconditional devotion and
dedication to his first spiritual master.
It was around this time that Guruji was appointed as Professor at Lusaka University in Zambia. At this time, he was unable to concentrate and manage both work and his spiritual endeavors. Since his conscience was also against his research being used for military defense, Guruji considered this offer as a blessing in disguise and immediately left India for Africa.

Chidagni: Part 6

Spiritual Experiences Upon Guruji’s return to Bombay, he met his friend Radhakrishna Murthy.

During this visit, Guruji casually browsed his friend’s collection of spiritual books. In one of these books, once he saw the first stanza of the Isaavasyopanishad, he was able to identify this as the same as he heard at the Birla Mandir in Hyderabad.

Since then, Guruji spent a lot of time in reading spiritual books. Multiple divine appearances of Lord Balaji continued to teach untold divine mysteries to Guruji on a regular basis. Over the next 12 years Guruji was lost in a spiritual world under the guidance of Lord Balaji. Guruji was able to read divine scriptures with his eyes closed.

From that stage, Lord Balaji, for the next 12 years, had blessed Guruji with the opportunity to explore and delve deep into vast spaces of spirituality. Multiple Vedic scriptures were rendered to impart knowledge to Guruji. Lord Balaji let Guruji trot over many rainbows. These countless divine experiences kept occurring.

Upon returning to Bombay, Guruji was curious to explore and find out if the inner sounds that he kept hearing as a boy would resurface once again. So, Guruji started meditating once again. As a young boy, Guruji was unaware of the importance and relevance of the deep inner sounds. He fully understood their importance and relevance at this stage in life. So he made a sincere attempt to find
out whether he would be able to hear these sounds once again. To Guruji’s amazement, he was able to hear the vibrations once again, crystal clear deep and loud.

The Divine Mother appeared and took him all around the vast expanses of the universe, without leaving him alone even once. She was there for Guruji, which left him with a sense of humility and devotion for the Divine Mother. Guruji, with utmost concentration, started chanting the Lalita Sahasranamam and Khadgamala Stotram every day. Until these divine experiences kept recurring, Guruji had never made an attempt to perform pujas on a daily basis. Even after he started chanting Divine Mother’s salutations daily or experiencing Divine Mother’s grace in various ways, there was still some form of a scientific aspect attributed by Guruji to all these wonderful things.

“What is in it?” he thought. “Are all these experiences true? Why are these happening to me?” Guruji delved deeper into microanalyzing all these wonderful memorable experiences with a scientific frame of mind, as the Divine Mother with no concern to Guruji’s perspective, continued to attract and let him develop a sense of spiritual oneness with her.

One specific night at about 2 a.m. when Guruji was in deep meditation and eager to hear the deep inner sounds coming from within, he started hearing chimes of temple bells for about 10 to 15 minutes. With this divine experience, Guruji felt sincere peace and happiness. This divine occurrence repeated for a couple of days.

On the third day when Guruji was in deep meditation, there was a bigger divine experience waiting to happen. For 20 to 25 minutes Guruji was lost in a trance and after that, he suddenly lost his consciousness and physical connection with his surrounding world.

It just felt as if a large bomb exploded within him, and as though a bright light emanated due to this blast from within. Within that moment, Guruji got the feeling that he had visited all the stars, sun, moon and space. A large white screen appeared right in front of him, and multiple lines in Sanskrit, probably about 20 verses flashed instantaneously. By the time Guruji could realize what was happening, the white screen along with the verses vanished.
The only (first) verse that Guruji was able to read was,

Eesavaasya midham sarvam
yathkinchajagathyaam jagat
Thenathyathkenabhumjeedhaa
 mrugadha kasyasvidh dhanam

After Guruji regained his physical senses and normalcy, he got scared. He realized that a common man who has no inkling of any spiritual knowledge is at peace. Whether it was curiosity or any other factor, Guruji wanted to get down to the bottom and know the secrets. In addition, he was also concerned whether he would get into any serious trouble during his quest.

He thought, “What will happen to my family, and my mother? Is it not my moral responsibility to take care of them?” So for the next week or two, Guruji stayed away from meditation.

One fine day, it dawned upon him once again, “I meditated for a long time. I felt the large bomb exploding within myself. Nothing happened to me, and as of now, I am still alive. Why all the unnecessary fears? So, let me start my meditation sessions once again, and see what happens.”

Guruji was curious to find if he would hear the deep inner sounds once again while meditating. The first two days, his meditation sessions progressed smoothly. But on the third day, Guruji felt some strange movement along his spine right from deep down that kept creeping up and giving him an ecstatic feeling.

By the time this reached his stomach, Guruji visualized bright light and aura in front of him. But this time, the strange feeling moved up to his heart. Guruji was very terrified. He immediately remembered that he had prayed to Goddess Saraswati under similar circumstances when he was a young boy. To plead with Goddess Saraswati to rescue him, he immediately chanted,

Saraswati namasthubhyam, varade
kaama rupini,
Vidhyaarambham karishyaami siddhir
bhavathu may sadaa
Padma pathra Visaalaakshi, Padma
kesara vardhini
Nithyam Padmaalaya Devi,
Saamaampaathu Saraswati

As soon as he completed chanting, Goddess Saraswati appeared before Guruji. With all dedication and devotion, Guruji prayed to Goddess Saraswati.

Goddess Saraswati: Why are you afraid? What are you afraid of? I have presented you a unique experience. Enjoy it.

Guruji: I cannot bear this experience for long. Please save me from this! Goddess Saraswati: As you wish. I will help you. If you have any discomfort when meditating next time, please think of me. I will save you. Guruji continued his meditation session every day without fail. He started enjoying the experience, and felt extremely happy. Every now and then during his meditation, Goddess Saraswati appeared to Guruji.

Once when Goddess Saraswati led Guruji by his little finger, all along the way, lotus flowers bloomed to let the pair walk on them. During these memorable experiences, Goddess Saraswati took Guruji through rainbows, clouds and many other unimaginable places. She narrated to Guruji his past, and made these situations appear in front of Guruji during his deep meditation sessions.

After all these exhilarating events, Guruji happened to visit the library at Bombay University. He developed the feeling that he had already read and understood any book he browsed.

At this stage, Guruji’s strong belief in science and technology gave way to the understanding and appreciation that something else was even more powerful. It became very clear in Guruji’s mind that by meditation he could explore and find out about the secrets of nature that he was unable to comprehend through his research in science and technology. Goddess Saraswati narrated to Guruji about his past, his concentrated penance, love and dedication towards Divine Mother, and everything that led him to this current stage in spirituality and in life.

The Mother, with all her ever-flowing grace, smiling beautiful face, and compassionate heart had shown Guruji true motherly love. Guruji was blessed enough to gain worldly wisdom and become proficient in many shastras with the Divine Mother’s blessings. She named Guruji, “Hlaadini.”—as Radha was the power of Hlaadini to Lord Krishna, so did Sri Nishtala Prahlaada Shastri (Guruji) become the power of Hlaadini to his disciples? It happened once that when Goddess Saraswati appeared, her face looked like Guruji’s. Guruji, on the other hand, was playing her musical instrument, the veena. By the time Guruji realized this, he could see her as Goddess Saraswati again. As inquisitive as Guruji was, he asked Divine Mother the significance behind this experience.

Divine Mother said, “You are Goddess Saraswati. The name, ‘Saraswati’ belongs to one of the ascetic groups.“ Though Guruji does not wear the orange robes, he can be considered an ascetic in every other aspect. This, in turn, implied that Guruji had attained the peaks of spirituality with the Divine Mother’s blessings.

Chidagni: part 5

Career

1956 was a year of great significance in Guruji’s life. He had completed his education at Andhra University that year. It was in the same year Guruji got married to Srimathi Annapurna. The same year he joined Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Bombay as a Research Assistant for a monthly pay of Rs.175/- . All the three were major accomplishments for a young bachelor; education, marriage, job opportunity took place in the same year.

Since then and until 1977 for almost 22 years, Guruji was deeply associated in the field of research. During that period, he also became the proud father of 3 daughters.

When Guruji joined TIFR there were around 40 scientists who were experts in their own fields. Dr. Homi Babha was the head of TIFR.s In addition, he was also the Head of the Atomic Research Institute.

When Guruji was at TIFR, he was not only involved in research, but had also presented many papers in Nuclear Physics, Material Sciences, Solid State Physics, Solid State Electronics, etc. For the first time in India, under guidance of Prof. Ramanathan Guruji was involved in designing and building Integrated Chips in India. Later this technology was transferred to Bharat Electronics Limited located in Bangalore.

Over a period of time, Guruji gradually got involved in computer design. Slowly, Integrated Chips followed by 8- bit processor. Using TTL technology, he devised Floating Desk Calculators. Guruji’s quest for knowledge was never ending.

With utmost enthusiasm, Guruji involvement in research on Moss Bauer Effect of Nuclear Gamma Resonance leads to his Doctorate from Bombay University. Guruji mentions, “TIFR led to Atomic Energy Institute, and that in turn led to Electronics Corporation of India, and then ISRO, and then Thumba Rocket Launch Station, and so on. In this way, atomic power projects developed in India.”

After 23 years of Guruji’s service in TIFR, he had to get involved in Air Defense projects. At that stage, Guruji questioned himself “Why am I in this division? Are the projects in this group constructive?” These questions were causing him concern and his conscience wanted him to go against it. It was at this critical stage of contemplation that a life-turning, memorable event occurred. Second experience of consciousness.

Though Guruji was living in Bombay, he was traveling all over the country and had opportunities to meet intellectuals, industrialists, and interact with scientists and physicists engaged in various research organizations. It was in 1977 he was in Hyderabad, visiting ECIL (Electronics Corporation of India) for discussions on mini computer programs. Though he was tired, being busy at work all day, he did not get sleep one night. Guruji decided to step out for a walk.

It was around 5 a.m. and the streets were still deserted at that time. Guruji saw a temple glowing as bright as Iravatham at an elevation. There were steps leading to the top into this temple.

Guruji started walking towards the temple that interested him, and realized that it was a Hanuman Temple. Unknowingly this abode of worship reminded him of the Hanuman Temple opposite to Prabhat Talkies in Visakhapatnam. He remembered his childhood when he used to go that temple daily for prasadam. Guruji started climbing the steps towards this Hanuman Temple. Having never visited temples since 11 years of age, and being 45 years old at that stage, Guruji felt as if someone was pushing him from behind.

Guruji observed that there were hardly four or five devotees in the temple. He then found an old man offering respects by prostrating to Lord Hanuman. Having hardly visited any temple, Guruji also offered his respects by prostrating before Lord Hanuman. It was at this moment that unexplainable joy and happiness flowed through his body like electrical current. Guruji later said this experience could not be explained in words.

It was at the same time Lord Balaji dressed as male as well as female approached Guruji and energized him. Balaji—as Bala, Bala Tripura Sundari (Gopaala Krishna in male form) gave the divine blessing at those auspicious moments.

An old Telugu saying indicates, “No one knows when it rains or when one becomes lifeless.” To this day, though technology has advanced great strides, and can predict rains it still remains an unsolved mystery to determine when one may lose life. For that matter, no one even knows what may happen the next minute. On a similar note, Guruji never ever expected the visit to this Hanuman temple that day would change his life forever!

Guruji experienced exactly the same as he had as a young boy. The whole universe was going around him in circles fast and merging into him. Guruji recalled that this experience at a young age led him to become unconscious. He felt again his head was spinning. Guruji questioned himself, “Is this real happening to me once again?”

Before Guruji could realize what was going on, Lord Venkateshwara appeared before him in the masculine form with feminine aspects. He said, “I am Venkateshwara,  Bala, Balaji, and Bala Tripura Sundari.”
Guruji did not know what happened to him. Lord Venkateshwara touched Guruji and a bright spark of divinity pierced him through his forehead. Guruji was speechless and lost in tranquility. It was at this time, that he heard in a clear and soft voice, a verse from Isaavasyopanishad recited in his ears. Guruji lost track of time and presence, and continued to just keep staring at the presence of divinity near him.
Lord Balaji delivered enormous knowledge to Guruji. This strange experience led Guruji to believe he was lost in an ocean of divinity, and was enjoying every moment of what was happening to him.

By the time Guruji regained his composure and knew what was happening to him, he found that many had already left the temple. Realizing this, Guruji went and had darshan of the Lord, and slowly made his way back home. Many consider that it was this occasion that transformed Guruji into a divine soul. On his way back from the temple, there were many thoughts going on in
Guruji’s mind. “Why did I ignore and gradually lose the spirituality in me all these days?

When I have spent so much time and energy conducting research in my field, why not I allocate more time for spirituality? Are my current Air Defense projects that important? Counter acting to enemy’s air attacks may be great, but at the end of the day, these are weapons of destruction. When destruction can occur on a large scale at the switch of a button, why should I be a partner in crime?”
Childhood memories started coming to the forefront in Guruji’s mind and kept bothering him once again.

“I have a decent job. Having settled in defense research life is sailing smooth. So far, so good. So should I continue status quo? If I continue to delve deeper in research, to what extent is it appropriate? To defend my country from enemies is it valid to destroy fertile lands? Is it valid to harm and let innocent civilians suffer? As a consequence, huge fortune perishes.

What is more relevant? Why not this effort be spent to save lives instead of perishing them?”

These restless thoughts added fuel to the fire in Guruji’s mind. As a matter of fact, Lord Balaji’s darshan can be considered a turning point in Guruji’s life. It further invigorated him to think deeper.

“Should I continue with my modern sophisticated life style? In this lifetime, will spirituality lead me to higher levels? Is it possible? If so, should I pursue this? Possibly, I should delve into this deeper without any hesitation.”

Upon his return to Bombay, Guruji got fully engrossed in his daily activities, and never had an opportunity to explore his earlier thought process on spirituality.

Even in case, he had the opportunity to think about it, he did not know how to proceed further in that path.

Chidagni: Part 4

Guruji was extraordinarily smart in his studies, but lacked any interest in sports. He tried his hand at sports once and fractured his hand, and that was the end of his interaction with sports.
While studying at Saint Anthony High School in Visakhapatnam, he was always looking for answers on religion and traditions. Guruji’s questions were numerous.

“What is the difference between sleep and death?”

“What is the significance of divine visions?”
“Why was he getting those divine visions?”

“Was it just him or did others have similar experience?”

Guruji never received any definitive answers to his questions from his parents, teachers, elders, or kids his age.

Though he was fully aware that there was a strong meaning and significance to all this, unfortunately no one was able to explain it to him. Any answer provided did not satisfy Guruji either! Things unseen by human eyes and unheard by human ears always evoked strong emotions in him. Guruji always kept hearing strange sounds deep from inside.

But he was unable to understand the meaning or the origins of these sounds. He knew well there was some untold significance but unfortunately Guruji did not have any proper guidance at that young age to help him explore and understand these sounds. If that had happened was it possible that he may have found answers to all his unanswered questions?

There were multiple things and situations that created a lot of inquisitiveness, and thereby restlessness as Guruji was unable to get the answers to these unanswered questions. He resigned himself to the fact that no one knows answers to his questions, nor did he have the ability to find the answers on his own. He made up his mind to take his sister’s suggestion and give up thinking about God, creation, and all these unanswered questions.

He thought, “I can start thinking about these after I am 40 years old, and not bother about them until then!” And from then on, Guruji completely ignored spiritual pursuits just as his sister suggested, and was focused on his studies.
Maybe it was God’s will that Guruji got a taste of normal worldly life before fully delving in great
depths of spirituality, and so that spirituality and divinity never got in his way. Guruji excelled in his studies. Upon the advice of his brother Sri Nishtala Somayajulu, he completed his Master’s degree in Nuclear Physics.

As mentioned earlier, Guruji’s family was not well-to-do. Yet, they could make a decent living and were never at a shortage of basic needs, or to shower hospitality on friends and relatives. Right from a very young age, worldly pleasures never fascinated Guruji. He was happy he had wonderful parents, who showered him with love and affection and took good care of him! Studies were his prime responsibility, and he was fulfilling his responsibility. So what else did he really need to think or be worried about? If analyzed, this is the basic characteristic of a genius mind. But how can it flourish? Only when the doubts get cleared and one has a definitive answer to each of one’s unanswered questions.

Even though Paramahamsa Yogananda had attained the pinnacles of spirituality, he always asked his spiritual master
Sri Yukteswara Giri, “When will you show me God?”
Sri Yukteswara Giri always responded, “You have already seen God. What else can I show?” That in turn conveyed the entire essence of what was pursued by one and all.

Right from the olden days of Vedas to the days of rishis, to those spiritually inclined with a quest to attain God, it was made possible by showing a well defined path or by example. But over a period of time, this approach got sidelined and eventually vanished. Patience, dedication, and knowledge to attain God also diminished over period of time.

Rather than agreeing to the fact that one is illiterate in these endeavors, it has become a habit for an elder to impatiently shout, “Why do you bother us with these unnecessary questions? Go and play!” This was an easy way out for elders, and thereby the quest to attain this knowledge eventually diminished. Adding insult to injury, parents’ focus on professional education got utmost importance.
It was in this same fashion, Guruji’s quest for knowledge, spirituality, and God was always put down by one and all every step of the way. Getting involved in scientific studies further distanced Guruji from his aspired path, and his questions remain unanswered.

Guruji’s specialization in Nuclear Physics was closely associated with nature at a micro particle level. Guruji, in his eagerness, with all his enthusiasm, questioned others on how water, air, sky, sun, moon
stars, clouds, and nature in general functioned. Guruji’s only hope remained that if not all, at the least, a few of his questions were answered.

Guruji strongly believed that trying to understand spirituality was a form of penance, and so was trying to understand sciences. In addition, he also understood that there was one major difference between the two in its outlook. To understand the deep meaning of spirituality requires self-introspection of one’s thoughts, beliefs, and nothing more than that.

At the same time, Guruji was also fully aware that to get a better understanding of science, scientific equipment and labs along with relevant scientific knowledge was essential. Even though these clearly defined the borders and limits of science, Guruji never discounted the notion that science can equally be considered a penance in its own form.

On the other hand, Guruji was clear in his thoughts that in case of spirituality, there can be no limits or boundaries defined to curtail the depth to which one can delve into seeking selfrealization. At the end of the day, Guruji was of the firm belief that both were great in their own ways.

Discoveries made in science, and inventions and innovations made in technology have provided comforts to mankind. But at the same time, these have contributed to mankind’s behaviour in very many complex ways. Mankind may attribute greed, aggressiveness, anger, jealousy, and many similar unwanted desires due to these advances. At a personal level, it became more a question not of what one had, but more about what one did not have.
Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore once said, “Man made weapons to win the worlds, and the weapons defeated him!”

Guruji once said, “Science can never stop such disasters from happening! Man must change! His thought process must change! For this to happen, spirituality is the only path!”

The beauty of Guruji’s life has been that right from a very young age, his involvement in spirituality and thinking about God never changed even as time progressed. It just remained the same even after he mastered science.

Swami Jnananda

During those days, Prof. Swami Gyanananda was the Head of the Department of Nuclear Physics. Though he was an ascetic by nature, he was also a great scientist. Some say that it was our first Prime Minister Pundit Jawaharlal Nehru who requested him to head this department in Andhra University. Prof. Swami Gyanananda was a Kshatriya by birth. He had received his doctorate from Germany, and had taught at Oxford University before joining Andhra University. Upon his return to India, he went away to Himalayas to meditate. He had spent 18 years in the Himalayas, and was considered to have spiritual powers.

During the days he spent in the Himalayas, it was said that many saints would keep themselves warm by placing their hands on his warm body. He was known to have such a great internal spiritual strength in him.

Once he returned back from Himalayas and started leading a common man’s life, people started calling him 1008 Sri Gyanananda Swami. It literally meant that people would prefix his name with “Sri” 1008 times before calling him by his name. He was also considered an expert in Kundalini Yoga.

Sri Gyanananda Swami always wore orange robes. He was around 65 years old by the time he became Head of Nuclear Physics at Andhra University. Guruji had gone to Sri Gyanananda Swami’s house once. It was not a house exactly. It was more like a small cottage or a hut in an ashram. Guruji was extremely fascinated by a picture he saw at that place. This picture had two intertwined snakes with a lotus flower in between them. With immense curiosity Guruji asked Sri Gyanananda Swami what this picture implied.

Sri Gyanananda Swami laughed and said, “Oh! Looks like you are interested in these things too! But the time is not yet ripe for you to know about these things! Don’t worry! You will come to know about these things when the time is right.”

Sri Gyanananda Swami was an excellent teacher. In his first batch, he had only 3 students: Sri Nishtala Prahlada Shastri (Guruji), Sri Bhagavatula Nageswara Rao, and Sri Kandula Seetharama Shastri.

Sri Gyanananda Swami delved into spiritual aspects along with Nuclear Physics and this gave Guruji a preliminary insight into topics of his interest. Though Guruji was determined not to probe spiritual aspects until a later stage in life, how could one block or control the urge and inner desires? Being closely associated with Sri Gyanananda Swami as a student, these unfulfilled answers and thoughts continue to expand day by day in Guruji’s mind.

There were many occasions when Guruji realized that answers to many of his questions were in close proximity and yet unattained. This caused an unexplainable commotion in Guruji’s mind. In certain aspects, Guruji was able to derive the correlation between science and spirituality, and this amazed him. In the process, Nuclear Physics turned out to be Guruji’s favorite subject.
Under the guidance and blessings of his Professor Sri Gyanananda, Guruji successfully completed his studies. At the same time, Guruji also felt some strong unknown force had energized him to probe and seek new frontiers in his spiritual growth.

CHILDHOOD

Sri Nishtala Prahlada Shastri was born in Visakhapatnam on September 26th, 1934 to Sri Narasimha Rao, and Srimathi Lakshminarasamma. His sister SuryaLakshmi, who was hardly 4 years old then, went to her dad and said, “Dad! Prahlada is born! Please go and see him.” Father felt that possibly listening to Bhagavatam stories since childhood, she had inculcated that culture; he decided to name his son Prahladhudu. So, his sister was the one who had named Guruji. It was not a coincidence that he was a very special child from a young age.

As a child, Guruji would sit all alone looking into horizons, the landscape, lost in thoughts and hardly played with kids of his age. He always had lots of questions in his mind that he’d ask his elders.

Guruji: “How did the world come into existence?”
Elder’s response: “God create the world, my child.”
Guruji: “Why did God create this world?”
Elder’s response: “God created the world just for fun.”
Guruji: “Did God create this huge world just for fun?”
Elder’s response: “Dear child, please go and play for a while.”
Guruji: “I will go and play. Please answer my question. How did
God get the desire to create this world? Why did he? For what reason did
he create the world? What does God derive from this? If the wide world
was created for fun, is he amongst us to enjoy the fun?”
Elder’s response: “Man can talk. Animal cannot. If animal can talk and man cannot, how will it be? Will heavens fall? The answer is NO! If that is unimportant, so is this! Why does it bother you how things are?”

Guruji had many unanswered questions as no one was able to answer them in a true sense. Even if one question was answered it always led Guruji to have his next question ready. Even if anyone dared to answer him, being impressed with Guruji’s curiosity and innocence, they would realize that it was an uphill task and so no one dared to venture making an attempt.

Disappointed that no one responded to his queries, Guruji as a 5-year-old boy when sitting alone and thinking, would hear strange sounds. Sometimes it sounded like a veena, sometimes like a flute, sometimes like ghungroo, and sometimes like temple bells. At such a young age it was hard for Guruji to understand why and how he was able to hear such rhythmic melodies. But it was always made him happy! Though Guruji was unaware where these sounds were coming from, he always enjoyed paying utmost attention to this divinity. This in turn enhanced strong focus and concentration in Guruji.

From a very young age, Guruji had a very strong photographic memory. So, he had the ability to visualize every aspect that he had read in books. Because of this he always scored top marks during his education.

Once Guruji read questions on his question paper, he was clearly able to visualize the correct answer from the books he had read for exams. Guruji had a great analyzing power. He would analyze every important issue, and safely store it in his memory.

Between the ages of 5 years and 8 years, when many such astonishing wonders were happening, he on the other hand had also completed studying religious epics such as Bhagavatam. In addition, he had also completed reading Ashta Dasa Puranas.

Reading these epics gave Guruji immense happiness. Guruji was able to visualize and spend time with heavenly deities he was reading about. Whether Guruji was hearing or reading the holy epics, there were multiple situations that would appear in his vision as a reality.

Unable to bear the excitement, Guruji at that young age would tell other young kids, “See Krishna there! He is sitting on the tree and playing the flute.” Other kids, unable to visualize any of that would stare blankly. To top that, as Guruji would sit all alone looking into horizons, the landscape, lost in thoughts and hardly spoke otherwise, kids of his age considered him a weirdo.

FIRST EXPERIENCE

Guruji was around 11 years old. He would rarely play with kids of his age. He was once watching the kids playing, yelling, jumping and running all around. All of a sudden all the kids playing around, crowd nearby, passing vehicles, all the landscape was whirling around him in circles. This continued at such great speed, as if the entire world around Guruji was getting sucked into a huge whirlpool. At that stage, Guruji just fainted.

Nearby playing children shouted, “Shastri fell down! Shastri fell down!” and surrounded him. Hearing the children shouting, Guruji’s mom Smt. Lakshminarasamma came running out of the house. “What happened? What happened? Why did he fall down? Does he have any fever?” Everyone surrounding Guruji was anxious. News reached Guruji’s father. He came running to find his unconscious son lying in front of him. He carried his son into the house, and rushed immediately to get hold of a doctor.

Doctor diagnosed young Guruji, and told his dad not to worry, gave Guruji some medicine, and said, “I will come back and check him tomorrow to see if he has Malaria.” Next day Guruji had high fever. Doctor came and checked young Guruji, confirmed he had Malaria, and gave young Guruji a dose of Quinine and left for the day. How in the world would the Doctor know that it was not Malaria, and could not be controlled by Quinine? This dose of medicine had in fact diminished Guruji’s photographic memory.

A couple of days later after Guruji’s fever subsided, his elder sister SuryaLakshmi with all love and affection sat next to her brother and asked him, “What happened to you the other day? How come you fell unconscious?”

Young Guruji innocently replied, “I really don’t know! My head was not spinning! I was just standing and watching kids playing in the street. All of a sudden, everything around me started spinning. I just kept watching what was happening. All of a sudden, I fell unconscious without my knowledge.”

Guruji’s sister: “So, when you fell unconscious, did you see anything or hear anything?”
Guruji: “I did not hear anything. But, I saw different worlds. I was unaware where I was going! I
wandered in the skies. I had been to different worlds. Everything looked great!”
Guruji’s sister: “You didn’t get any malarial fever. After having seen all those wonderful sights, being a young kid, you were unable to take it. That’s how you got this fever.”
Guruji: “I don’t know sister! Sometimes I keep getting these doubts, and no one has given me a right response until now!”
Guruji’s sister: “What doubts?”
Guruji: “How did this world come into existence?”
Guruji’s sister: “God created this world.”
Guruji: “Why did God create this world?”
Guruji’s sister: “God likes you, me and all of us. That’s the reason why he created this world for all of us.”
Guruji: “How did we become his favorites? Does he know us?”
Guruji’s sister: “Yes.”
Guruji: “How does he know us? Where does he live?” Having reached this far, patiently responding to all her younger brother’s questions,
Guruji’s sister, with a blank face, said, “Only elders would know all that. We can’t understand all that.”
Guruji: “Then, how come, even elders are not answering my questions?”
Guruji’s sister: “They should know the answers to your questions. Only then, can they answer.”
Guruji: “It was just now, you said elders would know answers!”
Guruji’s sister: “I said so, but…”
Guruji: “I always have these questions! Where does God live? What does he do? Why does he have to hide? How do you know that God created this world? Sister! Please let me know!”
Guruji’s sister: “Don’t irritate others by asking such questions. Everyone will not understand such topics.”
Guruji: “I don’t know why! But such questions bother me always!”
Guruji’s sister: “Don’t worry about all this now! Focus your efforts in your studies and do well. What do you gain by bothering others with such questions?”

Whoever expected that this was Guruji’s first experience of true consciousness!

FAMILY FOUNDATION

Guruji’s father was a true Gandhian. Though he did not take part in freedom struggle, he led a very simple life, and earned his living by hard work. He was used to spinning cotton on charka, and wore clothes with the cotton he spun. All that he wore was a dhoti up to his knees, and nothing on the top. This was his daily attire. He was an avid photographer, and the photo studio was his daily livelihood. Though he was not highly educated, he was very principled in his life and was a true noble soul. Many photographers in Visakhapatnam trained under him during those days.

Under the guidance of such a noble being, his kids also grew leading a simple life devoid of movies, picnics, and other such extracurricular activities. Once Guruji had asked his dad four annas to see a movie.

His dad responded, “With four annas would you like to give your family the opportunity to buy some lentils or would you like to go ahead and watch a movie for your own enjoyment? What would you like to do?”

Guruji was a very young kid at that stage. Taken aback by his dad’s response, not knowing what to do, Guruji decided not to pursue his plans to see a movie. Guruji was aware of the simple and frugal life style that his family was leading. Though Guruji was feeling sad inside, he did not reveal his feelings to his dad or anyone.

Because of the economic conditions of his family, even when Guruji was attending college, he could only afford to wear khadi garments instead of regular pants. No one in Guruji’s family wore clothes made in mills. Guruji’s dad was bed-ridden and became paralytic.

Guruji was about 15 years when he lost his dad who was 55 years then. The entire responsibility of the family fell on Guruji’s shoulders. Guruji had to take care of the family and his brother’s education while having to stay focused on his studies at the same time.

Though Guruji scored very good marks and got admission into Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, not only was he able to afford the fees to go to college, Guruji could not even afford to buy a train ticket to attend the college interview though the train fare was only 10 rupees in those days.

So Guruji’s only alternative was to continue with his college education locally in Visakhapatnam. Guruji continued with his higher education, and earned a Master’s degree in Nuclear Physics.

Though Guruji’s desire to become an engineer remained unfulfilled, he made sure that his younger brother did not get into a similar situation. He sold off one house, and took a loan on another to ensure his younger brother became an engineer.
